Bodies

Hello friends,

Autumn is already well advanced and the nights are drawing in. I’m hoping for some cosy, restful evenings as it’s been a busy Summer, with the success of my first solo show Bodies at Le Pinardier in Deal from July to September. Thank you to everyone who came to the opening, it was a fabulous night and we had a huge turn out, spilling out onto the street and even stopping the traffic at one point!

I have been exploring the expression of rhythm and movement in the human form, and Bodies was a chance to showcase my first collection of male and female nudes. Like all my work, each painting begins with a series of rapidly drawn sketches where I observe my subject but don’t look at what my hand is doing on the page. These blind contour drawings help me to understand and connect with my subject on a more intuitive level. I then refine these spontaneous lines with a calligraphy brush and acrylic paint, aiming to express form with minimal yet powerful strokes. Sometimes I will add a wash or broad brushstroke in a single colour.

It's wonderful to know that many of my Bodies have already arrived in their new homes, some as far afield as France, the Netherlands and Denmark. Some smaller pieces from the show are still available for sale in my shop, or feel free to email me with any enquiries.

This Autumn I’ve begun work on a new portfolio of paintings I’m calling Birds and Beasts. Ranging from Elephants to Emus and everything in between, they represent quite the menagerie, and I’m looking forward to sharing them with you. They’ll be popping up in my instagram feed very soon, and will be the subject of my next newsletter just before Christmas.

Until then, thank you for all your continued support and encouragement - it means so much!
